What do you get when you cross a James Taylor and Pat Metheny fanatic on acoustic guitar; a Phish and Grateful Dead worshipper on electric lead; a jazz rebel on upright bass; a Steve Gadd celebrant on drums; two back-up vocalists who adore Beethoven and show-tunes; and an opera singer with a four-scale vocal range on lead vocals? You get the diverse and talented Tom Mac Group.
The goal of this 6-piece band is to make the hair on the back of the listener’s neck stand up. Expect passionate musical expressions, precise three-part harmonies, unexpected twists and turns of well-known compositions, soaring guitar solos (a fire extinguisher is at hand in case of spontaneous combustion), heart-wrenching arrangements, flatted 9ths where there should be none, and at times, the subtle playing of diminished, augmented, and suspended chords. As put more eloquently by Leonard Cohen - the fourth, the fifth, the minor fall, and the major lift.
Back from a bit of a hiatus, the Group’s fresh line-up displays creative arrangements of vast styles from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. Although the members take their art very seriously, they don’t take themselves too seriously. They are not a glum lot. They insist on enjoying life as it presents itself on the stage. If the audience could see no joy or fun in the existence of their performance, there would be no reason to perform. The band believes that music is the language of the heart. And this heart is well-tuned; beating with a passion that is ready to envelop all in its’ path. Get your body, mind, and spirit ready for a great musical experience.
